Cowboys laugh off rumored Jerry Jones ousting attempt

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has threatened to block Goodell's new contract with a lawsuit unless all owners are given a say on terms.

"The reality is where Roger's contract would be is roughly the same amount of money that he is making now and with that being many specific performance clauses that would be voted on by numerous owners as each year comes up", he said.

The NFL expects that a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell will be "done shortly", a league source says.

Goodell is making $30 million this season. One NFL source told CNNMoney that Goodell already has use of a private jet and health care for his family. Rather, Jones has said that he is trying to make Goodell's contract talks more transparent in light of what he calls recent missteps by the league office, including how it has handled the protests by players.

But amid plummeting viewer numbers and anger over anthem protests, some owners are now fighting to take matters back into their own hands.

Committee chairman and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said the committee was continuing to work on Goodell's contract, something that all 32 National Football League owners voted to approve at their meetings in May.

He said last month that "we want our players to stand" during the anthem, but stopped short of imposing a rule for players to do so.

Apparently, there is a belief among some NFL owners that "Jones instigated Papa John's CEO John Schnatter to disparage the NFL, blaming league leadership for ratings declines and, in turn, a reduction in Papa John's revenues", according to PFT. Then, his star RB Ezekiel Elliott was suspended once again, missing Sunday's game that resulted in a loss. The NFL said there were three incidents over five days.

On Sunday, when the Cowboys played the Atlanta Falcons, Jones and Blank, the chairman of the compensation committee, didn't greet each other, as is customary for owners to do at a game.

It's not clear how much Goodell was paid in 2016 and 2017. Goodell, 58, has been commisioner since 2006.
