With the update, Google Maps will subtly change based on what you're doing. You might not see gas stations when you're on public transportation, for example. " Google Maps will get a new look for driving, navigation, transit, and explore maps experiences".

It may sound like a small change, but Google says these visual cues will make it easier and faster to find places when you're in an unfamiliar area. "For example, if you're in a new neighbourhood and searching for a coffee shop, you could open the map to find the nearest orange icon (which is the color for Food & Drink spots)".

With the new update comes a new colour scheme and icons to help users quickly identify places of interest, and allows users to focus on specific categories; taking away from the gamut of information normally presented on Maps.

"Now, we're updating Google Maps with a new look that better reflects your world, right now". Moreover, there is a green icon for health and blue for shopping.

All Google devices that use Maps will be getting the update "over the next few weeks", including the Assistant, search, Google Earth, and Android Auto. After that, they'll begin rolling out to third parties who use the Google Maps APIs.

Google Maps will now take into consideration what you're currently doing, and show you important bits of information that will be helpful in that particular instance.
