She also talked about her transition and said: "I started transitioning while working at the newspaper in 2012, began hormone replacement therapy December 3, 2013, changed my name, gender and byline in 2015 and no one cared".

"To every person who's ever been singled out, who's ever been stigmatized, who's ever been the misfit..."

Her opponent, Bob Marshall, has named himself in the past as Virginia's Chief Homophobe, and has battled long and hard against LGBTI rights, even proposing a bathroom bill that was shut down in committee, making her defeat of him sweeter still.

Marshall made Roem's gender identity a source of attacks in the campaign too, repeatedly using male pronouns to refer to Roem and sending out an attack ad on a flyer based exclusively around Roem being trans.

And another transgender woman broke a glass ceiling on Tuesday - Lisa Middleton, who was elected to city council in Palm Springs and became California's first openly transgender non-judicial elected official. Roem asked Noisey in the midst of her campaign.

Marshall, who has represented the state in the House since 1992, has consistently been at odds with the LGBT community.

'Year of the Trans Candidate'
While Roem focused her race on traffic and other local issues in Virginia's Prince William County, she faced Robert G. Jenkins said in a statement Tuesday night, "My election is what resistance looks like".

Marshall sponsored a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage and also introduced a bathroom bill this year created to require transgenders to use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex rather than the sex they identify with.

Andrea Jenkins won election to the Minneapolis City Council, becoming the first openly transgender person of color elected to office in the U.S. Jenkins was a policy aide on the city council and won more than 70 percent of the vote.

She and her supporters knocked on doors more than 75,000 times in the district, which contains 52,471 registered voters.

Roem, 33, was born in Manassas, Va., and worked as a journalist for local newspapers in Virginia and Maryland including the Gainesville Times, Prince William Times and the Montgomery County Sentinel. "This is just who I am".

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Marshall said: 'For 26 years I've been proud to fight for you, and fight for our future. Tyler Titus, who is openly transgender, won a seat on a western Pennsylvania school board.

Roem wasn't the only transgender candidate elected Tuesday. "Tonight was the opening salvo", Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president & CEO of Victory Fund, said in a statement.
