Trump on North Korea crisis: I'd never call Kim 'short and fat'

Tensions between North Korea and the USA have escalated in recent months following the rogue state's sixth nuclear bomb test on September 3, which earned more sanctions and condemnations from the UN.

But Trump's remarks Sunday suggesting the two world leaders could become friends was a first for the president, and possibly any USA leader since beginning of the Korean War in 1950.

"A lot of times, Donald Trump goes way over the line with his tweets, but this time - that was pretty damn amusing", said Che.

It comes days after Trump left Seoul, where he offered a lengthy, detailed critique of North Korea's human rights abuses and nuclear ambitions.

But in its retort yesterday, North Korea said Mr Trump's warnings "can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance", but rather "pushes us to speed up the efforts to accomplish the great cause of completing the state nuclear force".

However, the insults also fit into a long tradition of insulting American leaders.

Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me "old", when I would NEVER call him "short and fat?"

Visiting Asia, the president has tried to bring the world together in pressurising North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, something that's proving somewhat of a tough task.

North Korean state media said this week that "no-one can predict when the lunatic old man of the White House, lost to sense, will start a nuclear war", referring to Trump's aggressive rhetoric toward Kim Jong Un.

He didn't elaborate on what "the last" might be, but North Korea has launched ballistic missiles that have the potential to strike the US mainland, and it recently conducted its largest-ever underground nuclear explosion.

The four-day joint naval exercises by the USA and South Korea, which began Saturday in waters off the South's eastern coast, were described by military officials as a clear warning to North Korea. However, though his speech to South Korea's National Assembly was deeply critical of North Korea, it was less bombastic and more measured than his previous statements.

Trump on Friday shared a vision of economic nationalism in Da Nang during a speech at the APEC summit, encouraging Asian nations to embrace patriotism. Trump, however, is a famously impulsive tweeter.

Also to be mobilized are 11 U.S. Aegis ships and seven South Korean warships.
