Knowing in advance that the USA would veto Monday's Security Council resolution, the Israeli delegation refrained from mounting the kind of intensive lobbying effort it has in the past in such situations.

In a letter dated December 13, Trump expressed gratitude for the gesture and satisfaction that Israelis welcomed his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of their country - which apparently earned him the honor. Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.
