Andhra Pradesh, Google X ink MoU to bring FSOC technology to India

Much like fiber optic cable, FSOC relies on beams of light to provide connectivity.

X plans to deploy free space optical technology, which transmits data through light beams at up to 20 gigabits per second between the rooftop boxes.

The Andhra Pradesh State Fibernet Limited (APSFL) and X Development LLC, known as X, Alphabet, that works on new cutting edge technologies, entered into an agreement in San Francisco, USA, on Friday. After successfully transferring a copy of the 1985 comedy Real Genius over 100 kilometers between balloons using FSOC lasers, X started to wonder if the technology could be applied more terrestrially. Under the agreement, X as the innovation partner will provide the FSOC (Free Space Optical Communication) technology to the APSFL.Speaking on the occasion, IT Minister N Lokesh said that with X coming to Andhra Pradesh, the State will see revolution in communication.

"This association with X labs to implement FSOC in AP is first of its kind in the world to provide wireless internet connection at a higher speed of up to 20Gbps and to a distance of up to 20kms". X engineers and experts on site in AP will work together with APSFL personnel identifying and selecting suitable sites for deployment of the FSOC links. X will be partnering with Indian telecom AP State FiberNet to pilot the technology in Andhra Pradesh, the firm announced in a blog post.

The State government has launched AP Fibergrid project with a view to providing digital connectivity to every household in the State.

Less than 20 per cent of people in Andhra Pradesh now have access to broadband connectivity. In that state, less than 20% of the residents have access to broadband and the state government has committed to connecting 12 million homes and government organizations by 2019.

"These FSOC links will form part of the high-bandwidth backbone of their network, giving them a cost effective way to connect rural and remote areas across the state", according to the Alphabet post. The Google project is aimed at "critical gaps to major access points, like cell-towers and WiFi hotspots, that support thousands of people", Google said.
