Florida man drags officer with his auto for half-mile

A police officer in Broward County has been hospitalized after he was dragged by a suspect's speeding vehicle on Tuesday.

Bodycam footage shows the officer approaching the vehicle and engaging with the suspect, later identified as Thomas Cabrera, before opening the auto door.

A Florida cop is recovering after he was almost dragged to his death by a suspect's vehicle after the driver took off during a traffic stop, authorities said. But as he tried to enter the vehicle, the driver woke up, and suddenly accelerated, with the officer hanging off the driver's side door. A clear bag with an unknown substance were also spotted inside the auto.

Part of the hair-raising ride was captured on Officer John Cusack's body camera.

Officer Cusack will survive, but suffered injuries that require surgery.

Meanwhile, Cabrera continued to flee, police said.

The vehicle that struck Cusack got onto northbound Interstate 75 before continuing east on I-595.

All lanes of eastbound I-595 were closed during the takedown.

Police approached the vehicle with their guns drawn and arrested Cabrera and the female passenger.

"We wish to thank our residents who have offered both support and prayers for the safety of our officers during this time".

On his way to Century Village's Pembroke Road and 129th Avenue exit, Cabrera allegedly tried to ram into Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue trucks that were responding to the original overdose call.

"He's doing very, very good - good spirits".

"He has some injuries to both forearms and then his feet".

"Cusack is a hero", said Marano.

According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, the harrowing event occurred after a concerned resident reported that two people were believed to be unconscious-possibly due to an overdose-inside of a parked vehicle.
