Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani tells Yankees and Red Sox he'll sign elsewhere

Ohtani, the two-way Japanese phenom making his jump to Major League Baseball this offseason, reportedly has narrowed his free agency list to seven teams, and the New York Yankees aren't among them. The decision won't come down to money, as no team can offer more than $3.5 million to sign him due to Major League Baseball restrictions. However, the right-handed ace/left-handed slugger indicated that his preference was to play for a team on or near the West Coast and in a smaller market, which would also spell disappointment for other would-be bidders in the East.

Prior to Sunday, the Yankees were believed to be the favorites to land Ohtani as they had the second-largest amount of worldwide spending money ($3.5 million) behind the Rangers ($3.55 million).

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported Sunday that other teams eliminated from contention include the Mets, Brewers, Pirates, Twins, as well as the A's and Diamondbacks.

It didn't take long for Shohei Ohtani to become a villain in the Bronx. "I know that our presentation was excellent". "The feedback from that was outstanding".

Red Sox spokesman Kevin Gregg confirmed Boston's elimination from the bidding.

In this article, MLB.com states the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers join the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs as the teams still in potential discussions for Ohtani. Brian Cashman said the news was "disappointing". "You move on", Cashman added. He's an exciting young talent.

Ohtani is limited to a minor league contract because of restrictions imposed by the MLB collective bargaining agreement.
