Liberia's elections board certifies Weah presidential win

"We knew George Weah well before he became elected president of Liberia".

Speaking at the emotionally charged headquarters of the ruling Unity Party, where scores of partisans had converged in tears on Friday afternoon, VP Boakai said "a while ago, I called Senator Weah of the CDC to congratulate him on emerging as the victor in the presidential contest".

Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves, is seeing its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years as Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize victor, steps down.

"Is it President Weah?" said the New Dawn newspaper, referring to a man who had the backing of heavyweights including former warlord Prince Johnson and apparently the covert support of outgoing president Sirleaf.

Tweeting in French in response to congratulations from French President Emmanuel Macron, he added that "we have a lot to do together to accelerate the building of tomorrow's Africa".

His election success was noted with pride by former clubs Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

According to him, he had earlier placed a call to Weah, congratulating him on his prospective victory in the runoff election, and availed himself to help him in any way he may be found useful to advance the good of the country.

Weah's CDC party watched their icon miss out on the presidency in a 2005 bid.

A journalist at Afghan Voice, Sayed Abbas Hussaini, said there appeared to have been more than one explosion during the attack. It has scaled up its attacks in Kabul , including on security installations and the country's Shiite minority.

Weah was raised in Clara Town, a poor suburb of Monrovia, and played football across the river in West Point, Liberia's biggest informal settlement, where he still commands a large following.

He will take office in January.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) on Saturday congratulated Liberian president-elect, George Weah on his recent victory in the country's elections.

Vice-President Joseph Boakai conceded on Friday, congratulating Weah.

Reports say the former AC Milan striker is all but the victor of Tuesday's run-off, as he now leads incumbent vice-president Joseph Boakai with more than 60 per cent of the votes. The clip was uploaded to Facebook shortly after it was announced the 51-year-old politician had won the election.

Preliminary results showed Mr Weah won Tuesday's run-off with 61.5 per cent of the vote, based on more than 98 per cent of the ballots cast.

He is the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year.

He defeated Robert Sirleaf, son of President Sirleaf, making him the first Liberian worldwide athlete to be elected to represent a county in the Legislature. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak.
