OnePlus 5T doesn't support HD streaming on Netflix and Prime Video

According to posts on the OnePlus forum, OnePlus 5T is not able to stream HD standard content (720p) or higher on popular services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and even Google Play Movies. OnePlus 5T doesn't have the required certifications for HD streaming and the smartphone maker is at fault in this case.

The issue is likely due to the lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM. This was pointed out by whatthefunk, a OnePlus forum user.

The 5T is now certified for the L3 security level of Google's Widevine DRM regulation which blocks playing back content in high definition. Nor did he explain why it was omitted from the start.

The OnePlus 5T now supports Widevine Level 3, which only covers standard definition streams.

OnePlus says that this is an issue that will be fixed with a software update in the future, but it isn't going into any detail on when that might actually arrive. Amidst all the excitement of using the new phone, some users have noticed that the device is not able to stream HD videos from some of the popular video-streaming platforms.

For the record, the OnePlus 5T can stream in a higher resolution than SD on YouTube. In an age where a lot of media consumption happens on the go, it seems like a glaring oversight to not offer HD streaming capabilities on high-end handsets like the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5.

Unfortunately this surprising limitation also affects its predecessor, the OnePlus 5.

The spokesperson did not provide a time frame that when the update will be released to users.

There's now no date for the software update with the fix to land, with OnePlus simply saying "we're working on it" when pushed on a release timeframe.

But, as reported by both The Verge and Android Police OnePlus has promised that it will be adding support for HD for the two new devices soon.
