Oregon's Taggart to become Florida State's head coach, reports say

After just one year at Oregon, Willie Taggart will reportedly be named Jimbo Fisher's replacement at Florida State.

OR made an attempt to retain Taggart even before the Florida State job opened up, offering a one-year extension on his contract that runs through the 2020 season to boost the value of his five-year deal to $18 million, former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy reports. A Florida native, Taggart spent one year in Eugene, leading the Ducks to a 7-5 record and an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound defensive back, out of Wesley Chapel High School (Zephyrhills, Florida), was the most likely prospect to decommit in Oregon's class if Taggart left for Florida State. Taggart briefly coached with Harbaugh's son who was nearing the end of his National Football League career.

He then accepted a scholarship to Western Kentucky, where he flourished as a 4-year starter from 1994-1998 and became a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in each of his last two seasons. He helped South Florida earn its first 10-win season in history in 2016.

The 41-year-old Taggart was hired by South Florida in 2013 and led the Bulls from a 2-10 record his first season to a 10-2 record in 2016 before being hired by the Ducks. However, before their bowl game in 2012, he was hired by USF to be their next head coach. Now Mullens has to once again find a new head football coach.

OR started 4-1 and even briefly popped into the AP rankings, but starting quarterback Justin Herbert broke his collarbone and the Ducks floundered, going 1-4 without him.

Florida State was ranked third in the Top 25 preseason poll but lost quarterback Deondre Francois in the opener against Alabama and was beset by other injuries.

Taggart is considered a skilled recruiter, and given his ties to Florida, he should have success in a talent-rich state.

They won their final three games to finish 6-6 and extend their bowl streak to 36 consecutive seasons.
