Pot use among pregnant women of all ages continues rise

The study, which looked at pregnant females in California from 2009 to 2016, found that trends in marijuana use among them increased overall in that time period. "From 2002 to 2014, the prevalence of self-reported, past-month marijuana use among US adult pregnant women increased from 2.4 percent to 3.9 percent".

California's initiative requires marijuana products to bear labels warning of potential health hazards, including that marijuana use while pregnant or breastfeeding could be harmful.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, more pregnant women in the Golden State are smoking pot than ever.

Some of the sharpest increases in marijuana usage were among pregnant women under the age of 18 and between the ages of 18 to 24 years old.

For other age groups, the researchers found that marijuana use rose from 3.4% to 5.1% among women 25 to 34 and from 2.1% to 3.3% among women older than 34. The women were treated at Kaiser Permanente facilities that had screening for marijuana use as part of standard prenatal care.

The phone call follows Lavrov's previous offer to step in and mediate the conflict between the United States and North Korea. The resolution adopted by the council also demands the repatriation of all North Koreans working overseas within 24 months.

One experts speculates that the rise might be partially explained by the increased availability of legal marijuana in recent years.

Many pregnant women are turning to the drug to treat morning sickness or anxiety associated with pregnancy.

Barbara Yankey, a researcher at Georgia State University, told Reuters marijuana use may be on the rise because of the recent legalization of its recreational use "has made people think of the drug as less unsafe, even during pregnancy".

In spite of its wide use, the new research suggests that pregnant women are still aware of some stigma against them for partaking in a toke or an edible.

But doctors in the United States warn that drinking any alcohol while pregnant could come with medical risks, such as the possibility of miscarriage, stillbirth, or physical and behavioral problems in the baby. These women start folic acid, lose weight and reduce medication exposure of any kind before becoming pregnant.
