Snow, winter weather to hit parts of the South

As of late morning Thursday, the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center says there's a 40-50 percent chance in the Baton Rouge area of seeing at least one inch of snow accumulation from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday.

Possible snow and icy roads are prompting closings and cancellations across South Mississippi.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for parts of the area Friday where brief, minor accumulations are possible.

"You can pretreat with the brine up to 48 hours ahead of the storm", said Bill Shelton, Cobb DOT's Road Maintenance Director, in a statement issued by Cobb County government. As the NWS says, "the forecast challenge is where the advancing cold air meets up with the moisture that has brought us the (rain) over the last few days". There will be extra moisture in the air Friday, but some of that will fall early as rain, she said.

The move comes after nearly 13 million Australians (79.5%) voted in the country's non-binding postal ballot to endorse the law. In a historic move, the same-sex marriage bill was passed through the House of Representatives .

The likelihood of rain or snow will be strongest after 5 a.m. Friday, according to the weather advisory.

Once the rain/snow ends Friday afternoon cold becomes the main issue with a hard freeze likely for all of Acadiana Saturday morning which could cause exposed pipes to freeze and burst. Only Chambers County within the News3 viewing area is included as of midday Thursday.

A cold rain mixed with sleet pellets is expected during the day on Thursday, with temperatures staying in the 40s all day.

It the drier air arrives faster than the models are expecting than we could see very little in forms of snow or wintry precipitation.

Carroll said the dip in the jet stream is responsible for Friday's weather possibilities, and it will drop again to result in next week's colder temperatures.
