These Proposed Sanctions On North Korea Would Hit Its Economy - Hard

She said that the United Nations had repeatedly offered Pyongyang a choice and repeatedly, in its continued missile tests, the regime had "chosen the path of isolation".

The U.N. Security Council is set to vote on new sanctions for North Korea after the country test-fired a missile it claims can strike the whole USA mainland.

According to the US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, "It (the resolution) sends the unambiguous message to Pyongyang that further defiance will invite further punishments and isolation".

The sanctions proposed by the United States include capping exports of kerosene, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to North Korea at 500,000 barrels a year from January.

A week after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called out Russian Federation and China for their support of Kim Jong Un's regime, the 15-member Security Council passed its fourth resolution against Pyongyang in 13 months on Friday.

Speaking before the Security Council vote, analysts said the new sanctions could have a major effect on the North's economy.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said the Security Council is sending "a very strong united signal to the North Korean regime that enough is enough, that they must stop their nuclear program and they must stop their intercontinental ballistic missile program".

The sanctions, passed on Friday, include a ban on almost 90 percent of refined petroleum exports to North Korea. Japan holds the presidency of the Security Council this month.

Resolution 2397 cuts exports of gasoline, diesel and other refined oil products by a total of 89%, Haley said.

Washington has been imposing sanctions on the country since 2008, banning the export of goods and services to the country, with little effect.

The draft resolution will also demand the repatriation of North Koreans working overseas within 12 months.

All North Korean workers in foreign countries are in principle to be repatriated within 2 years from the day the resolution is adopted.

Anchor: Tensions continue to rise between North Korea and the rest of the world as Kim Jong-un asserts his country's nuclear capability and the United Nations seeks even stronger sanctions against the rogue regime.
