Trump Says He's Encouraging Orrin Hatch To Run For Another Senate Term

Romney has been public about his disagreements with Trump and is a key figure in the Never Trump movement, while Hatch was an early supporter of Trump during the 2016 campaign and has since defended Trump's presidency.

Trump has been urging Hatch to run long before Romney entered the conversation, according to the senator's office.

According to Trump deputies, the president's relationship with Hatch began before Romney planned of being Utah's senator. Republican officials say Romney, a Utah resident who was the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, has been preparing to run for Hatch's seat next year.

However, Utah Republican House Speaker Greg Hughes maintained Romney "could be a great ally of the president, but, as you well know, they're very different people and have very different personalities".

The Republicans who discussed the matter with Romney recently said they are convinced Trump wants to keep the former MA governor out of the race.

According to Politico, Romney himself has grown frustrated by the "ongoing uncertainty" about Hatch's future plans, especially after the senator encouraged him to consider run in the first place.

Hatch in April said he would "consider" retiring if Romney ran for his seat.

Trump's support might have less to do with Hatch, however, than with a secret desire to block Mitt Romney from serving in the Senate.

"Whether it's confirming judges, passing tax reform or accomplishing any part of his agenda, Hatch is a key player in getting anything done", Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said late Sunday. And indeed, Hatch was reportedly telling friends he wouldn't.

Also, Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, is contemplating endorsing Hatch to block Romney, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday.

He charged that Trump's domestic policies would lead to recession and his foreign policies would make the world more unsafe.

Trump called Hatch "a very special man" on Monday.

Hatch, the president pro tem of the Senate, recently tweeted that Trump is the best president he has served under in the line of succession. Several were teenagers at the time. Rex Tillerson. Perhaps as a reaction to that particular humiliation, Romney has carried on his criticism of Trump, saying that the White House's response to the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville "caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn", and bashing Trump for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement.
