Volkswagen executive gets 7 years in prison for emissions scandal

VW used sophisticated software to cheat emissions rules on almost 600,000 U.S. vehicles.

He was accused of knowingly providing the Environmental Protection Agency with false information about engine computers in more than 500,000 of Volkswagen's diesel vehicles, which investigations found were purposefully programmed to hide unlawful emissions performance.

Schmidt, a German national responsible for Volkswagen's environmental and engineering office in MI, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of defrauding the United States and another for violating the Clean air Act.

Schmidt, 48, also was fined $400,000 in federal court for his role in the automaker's diesel emissions cheating scandal.

In a letter addressed to Judge Sean F. Cox from the Federal District Court of Detroit, he wrote that "A script, or talking points, I was directed to follow for that meeting was approved by management level supervisors at VW, including a high-ranking in-house lawyer". "You saw this as your opportunity to shine ... and climb the corporate ladder at VW".

Last week, Schmidt's attorneys made a last-minute bid requesting a lighter sentence for Schmidt: 40 months of supervised release and a $100,000 fine. The government said he later misled investigators and destroyed key documents.

Volkswagen engineer James Liang was sentenced to 40 months in prison and fined $200,000 in August for his role in the scandal.

In March, VW brought an end to Washington's criminal pursuit of the company, agreeing to pay Dollars 4.3 billion in civil and criminal fines and plead guilty to charges it likewise had defrauded the United States and violated the Clean Air Act. First revealed in September 2015, the firm illegally manipulated software on its cars to artificially lower nitrous oxide emissions under test conditions.
