Donald Trump cancels February visit to UK

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, however, said that the U.S. president cancelled his trip in fear of protests.

The embassy's new cube-shaped building is designed by American architect KieranTimberlake and will be open for business on Tuesday.

However, Mr Trump blamed former president Mr Obama's administration for selling "perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for peanuts". In an outburst on Twitter, the U.S. president said the new location is "bad" and no, he won't cut the ribbon.

Many British politicians have voiced their opposition to Trump being granted a state visit, and say the invite should be recalled.

The decision to acquire a new London embassy site on the south bank of the Thames was announced in 2008 under George W. Bush along with the plans to put the old Grosvenor Square site in upscale Mayfair up for sale.

Last night British officials said the visit was canned for "personal reasons" after a series of perceived slights.

Asked about the PM's views on south London after the president described the embassy's new site as an "off location", the Number 10 spokesman said: "I think Vauxhall is a vibrant and important part of London and home to many businesses". The idea had gradually evolved into a working visit in which Trump would open the London embassy.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not reply to a request for comment. In December, Johnson said he was looking forward to welcoming the president.

Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said, "New York City's impressive leadership makes me hopeful for the future". New York City mayor Bill de Blasio speaks during his election night victory gathering, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, in New York.

In the meantime, the relationship between May and Trump has come under strain. She later said Trump took her hand in a gentlemanly gesture as they walked down a ramp.

His decision not to come was welcomed by critics outraged by the U.S. travel ban on Muslim-majority countries, and more recently, Trump's decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim videos posted by a British far-right organisation.

A Number 10 source said: "Boris expresses himself in his own inimitable way, but we agree that any risk to the crucial US-UK relationship is not in our country's best interests".

The main reason cited was security: USA officials said it would have taken several years and hundreds of millions of dollars to bring the old embassy, completed in 1960, up to standard.

"His visit. would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests", Khan said.

The mayor of London - who has been criticized by Trump in tweets - said Trump appeared to have "got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city's values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance".

Last month Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for his supporters to go out in force to send Mr Trump a "clear message" that he is not welcome if he comes to the UK.
