Instant Talaq Bill to reach Rajya Sabha today

Kolkata: After weeks of silence, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today attacked the BJP over the triple talaq bill. If the government, opposition and the Muslim personal law board were concerned about our rights, they would have shown this urgency to pass the women's reservation bill.

The Congress has not helped its cause by the way it conducted itself in Upper House of Parliament. The govt has hit out at the Congress for its duality. One reason why it was keen on introducing criminal provisions was that there were several cases of instant divorce even after the Supreme Court judgment.

Clause 4 says "Whoever pronounces talaq referred to in section 3 upon his wife shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and fine". "But the Congress does not believe in tokenism like the BJP is doing in the name of Muslim women", Dev said.

At the time of writing this, the bill is all set to be tabled and come up in the Rajya Sabha. Hitting out at Congress, Jaitley said, "The whole country is watching that in the other House you supported the Bill and here you are trying to derail it" and sought a ruling from the chair on this matter.

Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal contended that the Constitution visualized a bi-cameral Parliament for the very goal that "if one House errs, the other House rectifies it". Who is going to provide for the woman and her children in the meanwhile? But his position, as reflected by his party's stand on the key Bill, may put him in same spot from where he had began in the run up to Gujarat elections. It hopes high to get clarification after passing by the Lok Sabha. "In the Rajya Sabha, we have again asked for the same amendments and that it be referred to a select committee", Sibal told ThePrint. Moderated by Anant Tyagi, the guests were Congress spokesperson Ajay Verma, SP leader Manoj Yadav, BJP spokesperson Chandrabhushan Pandey, Muslim religious leader Maulana Yasub Abbas, social activist Nahid Akil, senior advocate of Supreme Court SP Singh and consulting editor of APN Govind Pant Raju. The ruling party feels the only space left for Congress is to criticise some provisions of the Bill, move a few amendments but not block passage of the Bill.

"Whether the bill will go to a parliamentary committee or not is decided by the Rajya Sabha chairman on the basis of the sense of the House".

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving leads all East guards with 1,370,643 votes, followed by Toronto Raptors' DeMar DeRozan (537,168). The league's coaches will determine the reserve pool and the captains will complete their rosters picking from that group.

"The BJP government has little faith in parliamentary democracy and consultative processes". The Congress with 57 members and Trinamool Congress which has 12 members are uncomfortable opposing the Bill in the Upper House. Thus the party's strategy was to "expose" the Congress and make it a political point that the Grand Old Party was still enamoured with the Muslim clerics and was not bothered about gender justice. They only take credit.

"The practice (of triple talaq) was declared unconstitutional on 22 August". Seven or eight parties have supported our amendments in the Rajya Sabha.

With no agreement, the government placed the bill in the bottom in the list of business, which the opposition strongly objected to and demanded that its motions for referring the bill to a Select Committee be taken up immediately.

Thus the contentious bill can now be passed only in the next session of Parliament -the panel will have to be constituted and then it will scrutinise the bill and suggest changes, reported NDTV.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance is in a minority in the Rajya Sabha. The opposition said that the party is playing politics with the issue. "If the majority's view is not heard in this House, where will it be heard?" he quipped.
