Passengers Injured in Train Crash at Richmond Station

16 people have been injured including a train driver and a guard after a new Waratah train hit a buffer stop at the end of the rail line at Richmond station in Sydney's north-west this morning (Jan. 22).

NSW Fire and Rescue said three people were initially trapped inside the train, but have now been freed.

East Market Street is now closed between March and Windsor Streets to assist emergency services.

At least two people have severe injuries after a train crash at Richmond station.

Paramedics treated 15 people following the accident.

At the time of writing, ABC News has reported that as many as 20 people were injured in the incident.

One passenger was believed to suffer spinal injuries. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.

He said the train came in at speed and hit the buffer and rebounded.

Fifteen ambulance vehicles were deployed to the scene, together with two rescue helicopters, with the patients taken to four hospitals in the region.

Witnesses described the incident as "insane".

Officials said it is too soon to determine the cause of the crash.

"The 10:11am train service from Richmond to Central has been cancelled", Sydney Trains tweeted on Monday.

"It's all chaos here", another caller, Steve, told the station.

"It is obviously very concerning", he told reporters in the city ahead of a scheduled meeting with unions over pay for train workers, which has been postponed because of the incident.

She was sitting down, six carriages back, when the train collided with the buffer stop and she was thrown from her seat, hitting her head in the fall.
