USA ambassador accuses Palestinians of preventing peace

Israeli forces closed on Wednesday Huwwara checkpoint south of Nablus preventing movement of cars on a major north-south West Bank road.

People attend the funeral of the shooting attack victim in Havat Gilad, a Jewish settlement near the Palestinian city of Nablus, on January 10, 2018. The isolated community of a few hundred Israelis is located deep inside the West Bank.

During his eulogy, Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold a Security Cabinet meeting in light of the terror attack.

The Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas praised the shooting as "heroic" but did not claim the attack. According to Ma'an documentation, 14 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since US President Donald Trump announced last month that he was recognizing Jerusalem - the Eastern half of which is illegally occupied by Israel in violation of global law - as the capital of Israel. Hamas praises the killers and PA laws will provide them financial rewards.

"Security forces are pursuing the terrorists who murdered Rabbi Raziel Shevach, may God avenge his blood", the statement said.

Israel has long unsuccessfully pushed for the Palestinians to halt the "martyrs' fund" - payments to roughly 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in the conflict with Israel, including suicide bombers and other militants, arguing that the practice encourages violence.

Iran protests United Nations emergency meeting
Russian Federation and China are among the countries that are expected to oppose Security Council action on Iran, diplomats said. Now, the Trump administration seeks to slash Near East Regional Democracy Fund's budget in half, to $15 million .

United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, also condemned the attack on social media.

"The terrorists who murdered Rabbi Raziel Shevach were aware of "the terror price list" of Abu Mazen [Abbas] and knew how much money the will receive for the murder", Bennett wrote on Twitter this morning. "This is not the path to peace!" he tweeted.

Wednesday's approvals came as Raziel Shevach was laid to rest in the West Bank outpost of Havat Maon.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war.

The plan represents a last-ditch attempt by the Defense Ministry to save a majority of the homes after the High Court rejected a compromise proposed by the residents to cut off the "problematic parts" of six homes that only jut onto private Palestinian land by a matter of meters. It annexed East Jerusalem, saying the entire city is its indivisible capital, in a move that was not internationally recognized.
