Black unemployment spiked last month, disputing President Trump's self-serving argument

At the same time, it remains higher than the unemployment rate for white Americans, which declined to 3.5% in January from 3.7% the month before.

Unemployment rates for black workers in the USA jumped in January, after hitting a record low in December.

Trump and the White House have both touted black employment rates, including during the president's first State of the Union speech earlier this week, when he said the rate was something he was "very proud of".

That hike - from 6.8% to 7.7% - comes after black unemployment plummeted to the lowest point in history in December after having been slashed almost in half during President Obama's second term.

Trump's touting of the black unemployment rate was always misleading.

True, the rate did hit 6.8% in December, which is the lowest point on record.

Trump also tweeted about the record low on January 19 - and he mentioned it Tuesday during his first State of the Union address. He declared that the GOP tax plan, which went into effect last month, was to thank for the overall unemployment rate being at 4.1%, average earnings being up by 2.9% since last January, and 200,000 new jobs having been created last month.

Trump lashed out at Jay-Z using his favorite new statistic after he criticized Trump in an interview with CNN.

But President Trump didn't do anything to improve unemployment specifically for Black people in America, and taking credit for it is outrageous.

In one case, Trump tweeted about the record-low rate in response to criticism from the rapper and businessman Jay-Z. Black unemployment has never been equal to or lower than white unemployment in any month since the BLS began tracking it.
