Sri Lanka has moved up four places from 95th to 91st position in the Corruption Perceptions Index released by Transparency International for the year 2017.

The CPI is an annual survey measuring the perceived level of public sector corruption in 180 countries around the world.

At the 34th position, Botswana was ranked the least corrupt nation in Africa with a score of 61 per cent.

Transparency also said that this year's index reveals some disturbing information - "despite attempts to combat corruption around the world, the majority of countries are moving too slowly in their efforts".

Pakistan has received 32 score in latest rankings of 2017.

Although no country is free of corruption, the countries at the top share characteristics of open government, press freedom, civil liberties and independent judiciary, while Countries at the bottom are characterized by widespread impunity for corruption, poor governance and weak institutions.

The TI found that nearly all journalists killed since 2012 were killed in corrupt countries.

It was not only the media who had been in the focus of those fostering corruption, TI said, but civil society organizations, too.

Transparency International (TI) is obviously not impressed with President Buhari's credential as a corruption fighter.

Transparency International in its report has expressed its concern about the growing threats to the journalists, activists, opposition leaders and even staff of law enforcement or watchdog agencies. "We're calling on those governments that hide behind restrictive laws to roll them back immediately and allow for greater civic participation".

"There has been enforcement action taken nearly every week, with high-profile arrests throughout past year". To reduce civic involvement is to allow corruption to fester and grow and risk "the very essence of democracy and freedom", TI Chairwoman Delia Ferreira Rubio said.

The minister said the government had also proposed to insert the Corporate Liability provision in the MACC 2009 Act to address the "giver" aspect of corruption, which aimed at making companies which fail to implement adequate anti-corruption procedures liable for the country actions of their employees.
