US Olympian suffers horror crash in Luge event

Team USA luger Emily Sweeney was knocked out of the 2018 Winter Olympics after a terrifying crash during the final heat of the women's singles competition at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

Speaking to NBC before going to hospital, Sweeney said: "I'm very sore, and pretty stiff".

During the fourth run of the event, American luger Emily Sweeney bounced around the course and took several frightening hits against the rails.

Sweeney, a 24-year-old from ME, was able to walk off the course under her own power.

Curve 9 has been a problem for sliders throughout the early portion of the Olympics, causing many to skid, lose control and lose some time. Medical personnel rushed to her side before she finally stood up and walked roughly 10 minute after her crash, the Associated Press reports.

Emily Sweeney was thrown from her toboggan after getting sideways on the track.

Many in the crowd looked at the monitors, horrifed. Upon exiting the course, she received a standing ovation from the other lugers and was even able to say, "I'm fine", which, if you weren't crying already, certainly sealed the deal.

Monday marked the eighth anniversary of the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili on the eve of the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler, British Columbia.

"It's definitely one of the harder curves around the world", Tucker West of the US told NBC Olympics.

The 24-year-old, who is competing in her first Olympics, was initially diagnosed with bumps and bruises. Sweeney's official result was DNF, for Did Not Finish.
