Betsy DeVos Calls "60 Minutes" a Waste of a Half Hour

Betsy DeVos Calls

Lily Eskelsen García, president of the NEA, the teachers lobby, said last month that "bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence".

She admitted she doesn't how schools are performing in the state of MI, her home state. DeVos is trying to divorce students' success from their environments to justify the funding gap public schools will face as a result of her school choice program. But asked by CBS' Lesley Stahl whether she had visited low-performing schools to understand their needs, DeVos, an ardent proponent of school choice, admitted to having visited none.

STAHL: The public schools here are doing worse than they did.

"I don't know. I don't know", DeVos answered. Although the schools themselves are doing worse, there may be "pockets" of students doing better, she said.

Major Gov. Scott Walker donor and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos - both of whom have focused their careers on undermining our public schools in Wisconsin - know little about the value of public education or simply do not care, as they have enacted massive, damaging cuts to public schools in favor of private schools. "There is no doubt about it", she continued, admitting that she does not "intentionally (visit) schools that are underperforming".

"Are you in any way, do you think, suggesting that the number of false accusations are as high as the number of actual rapes or assaults?"

DeVos responded: "They want a variety of things".

Less than a day after DeVos was appointed to chair a federal commission on school safety, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders downplayed DeVos' role in the process.

"And all students means all students", DeVos said.

DeVos was a controversial cabinet pick for President Donald Trump, and advocates for increasing school choices rather than investing more in existing schools.

The wife of Amway executive Dick DeVos and wealthy in her own right, Betsy DeVos is a former two-time state Republican Party chairwoman in MI.

Naturally, Twitter has not let DeVos get off easy, and have dragged the woman for filth over her lack of knowledge.

DeVos' only previous experience in the education field before becoming the nation's top education official was as a school choice advocate in MI, pushing for changes in the state's laws to encourage charter and private school choice.

After the school shooting in Florida, Devos is expanding her portfolio.

For 11 states in the region with annual test data from 2014-16, MI shows the biggest drop in third-grade English language arts skills.

"She needs to deny the premise", Eden asserts, stating the media at this point is very hostile toward her. "I will stipulate that charter schools are doing better, but that is a frightful outcome for everybody involved".

It's easy to give DeVos grief for not being better prepared, but that's not entirely fair.

DEVOS: Well, one sexual assault is one too many, and one falsely accused individual is one too many.

"The logic that people try to manufacture is that the effort to end exclusionary school discipline renders schools unsafe places", Catherine Lhamon, who served as assistant secretary for civil rights in Obama's Department of Education, told me.
