Egypt election preliminary results: incumbent president is reelected

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been re-elected for a second term with about 92 percent of the vote, preliminary results showed on Thursday, with just over 40 percent of voters casting ballots.

Roughly 59 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in the election, in which incumbent President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is facing off against Musa Mustafa Musa, the leader of a little-known liberal party. The voter turnout data during the three-day voting are not yet given.

"There are a total of 3,930 voters on this roster at our polling station and 1,409 voters of them cast their ballots in the past three days", said the head of a polling station in Cairo. Meanwhile, the official results will be announced on April 2.

Early indications from sources monitoring the vote, however, suggested turnout could be lower than in the 2014 election.

The final day of voting in Egypt's presidential elections was marred by accusations of widespread intimidation by the authorities, some of whom offered incentives to try to boost the turnout.

Some 60 million people in Egypt were registered to vote on March 26, 27, and 28. Moussa joined at the last minute - sparing the government the embarrassment of a one-candidate race - and made no effort to challenge el-Sissi. Noha al-Nemr, voting in Cairo's middle-class Mohandiseen district, said: "I voted for Sisi of course, because it's enough that because of him, my family and I live in safety - even if there's hardship". "I wish that the next step is to change the constitution so he can run for a third, fourth, fifth (time) and forever".

Sun to start Wednesday, isolated showers by afternoon
Rain will spread back into the area by Wednesday evening, with showers continuing through the night into Thursday morning. Friday night: A chance of rain showers before 3 a.m., then a chance of rain and snow showers between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Opposition figures have warned they expect Mr Sisi will move to amend Egypt's constitution to scrap the clause limiting presidents to two terms, clearing the way for what could potentially be decades in power.

"Our beloved el-Sissi will win easily", she said.

Mostafa Abdel Kader, a 35-year-old delivery man, said he did not vote because there were no choices and he was "unhappy with the situation of the country".

"This is the only way for change".

Local media, which are dominated by pro-government commentators, have urged people to come out and vote, saying they have a national obligation to resist foreign plots aimed at sowing discord. I brought my son and told him to sign the ballot and drop it in the box so he gets used to it.
