Jaguar & Waymo To Collaborate On Autonomous Car Sharing

The fully autonomous vehicle just took a giant step closer to reality as Jaguar announced a major new partnership with Waymo, formerly Google's self-driving auto skunkworks. "The I-Pace is the world's first premium electric auto".

At a press conference today in New York, Waymo CEO John Krafcik announced the world's first premium electric self-driving vehicle. Adding a fully electric vehicle to its autonomous vehicle lineup seems like a logical next step, considering it's far and away the prevailing trend across the automobile industry.

The companies said the tie-up will tap into their shared goals of making cars safer, freeing up time for people, and improving mobility for everyone.

In a previous report, Ars Technica dubbed Waymo's self-driving software as the best in the world, with the publication taking particular note of the company's several layers of redundancies, including redundant controls for its cars' brakes, steering, and power supply.

Meanwhile Waymo is testing its connected cars in locations across the U.S., including Detroit, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; and Austin, Texas.

It's that which has helped fast-track the Waymo I-PACE into testing later this year, of course. But the company's competitors appear to be surpassing the unconventional electric vehicle company. The company says the fleet would be capable of handling 1 million rides a day. Witness, therefore, the news today that Waymo and Jaguar will collaborate to turn the new I-PACE all-electric SUV into the latest self-driving chariot.

"The company knows its technology is solid and it's eager to allow a wider audience to experience it". Our cars have covered five million autonomous miles on roads in 25 different American cities. The vehicles "will soon be playing a vital full-time role in Waymo's driverless transportation service", it said.

Many other autonomous driving firms are proceeding more cautiously now that we've seen what could be the first pedestrian death resulting from the technology, but Waymo is pressing forward even more aggressively.

The Jaguar I-Pace is expected to join Waymo's planned autonomous taxi fleet by 2020.

"It ended up being a really terrific next vehicle for us and fit one of the key aspects of our business plan", John Krafcik, Waymo's chief executive officer, said in an interview.
