New $10 bill unveiled featuring civil rights activist Viola Desmond

Desmond's sister, 91-year-old Wanda Robson, represented the leader's legacy as the new currency was introduced to the public at the Halifax Central Library.

A woman who stood up for the rights of black people in Nova Scotia, and went to jail for it, will be honoured today when the new $10 bill featuring her image is unveiled. "But it is an important story, because it shows that standing up for what we believe, whether it's on the step of Parliament Hill or in a movie theatre in New Glasgow, N.S., can make our country and our world a better place for future generations".

"The launch of the bill sends people of African descent the message that Canada is finally accepting us", said executive director of the Black Cultural, Russell Grosse.

Desmond's case is credited with playing a role in legally ending segregation in Nova Scotia in 1954.

HRM also named a harbour ferry in honour of Desmond, unveiling back in June 2016. Left in new Glasgow for the night, she chose to watch a movie in the cinema Roseland Theatre. There are also plans to name in her honor Park in Toronto and the streets in Montreal and Halifax.

Watchdog: Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway violated Hatch Act
Government officials found to have violated the Hatch Act can be fired, suspended, or demoted , and fined up to $1,000. The White House later said her praise for the products was inadvertent, and no disciplinary action was taken.

"I'm numb with joy", Robson said at the time of her sister's pardon.

Desmond became famous because of a business trip made her 71 years ago. That was the day when she entered a theater in the town of Glasgow and chose to sit in the "White' Only" section instead of the balcony where "colored people" were relegated. "It's handsome", she told an audience in Halifax. Desmond, who was short-sighted and could not see properly from the back, sat in the floor section and refused to leave.

Looking to kill time while her vehicle was being repaired, she stopped by a local movie theatre.

In 2010, the government of Nova Scotia issued an apology to Desmond, for prosecuting her and acknowledged her courage in resisting racial discrimination.

"You just can't spend it between now and the end of the year", he told her.
