Whether S Mode is enabled on a given device may be up to PC manufacturers, as is the case with 10 S's main competitor, Chrome OS. While Windows 10 S was launched to be a lite version of the Windows platform that could power lower-cost laptops to compete with Chromebooks, it actually hides the full version of Windows 10 inside.

The messaging on the software was always a bit messy, though, and the company didn't really do itself any favors by launching it on the high-end Surface Laptop. With the release of Windows 10 Redstone 5 later this year, the company is introducing a new Sets feature that brings tabs to all Windows applications. However, at least in the EU, Microsoft would have to obtain consent if the data was used in any other way than mentioned or if it wasn't clear to the user that the data would be used for more than just finding the device.

In a reply to Hachman, Microsoft's Belfiore wrote on Twitter, "We use Win10 S as an option for schools or businesses that want the "low-hassle"/guaranteed performance version". Accordingly, any copy of the OS will be locked down by the S Mode, which will make it run apps only from the Microsoft Store.
