Zinedine Zidane heaps praise on Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo

Eventually Madrid appeared to exert a degree of control and Ronaldo - following a moment of Luka Modric inspiration - opened the scoring in the 34th minute, continuing his brilliant recent form.

It was all going so well for Los Blancos as Ronaldo scored his 32nd goal of the season but Ivan Ramis drew Eibar level when he headered home from Pedro Leon's corner.

Ronaldo finally doubled Real's tally in the 84th minute on a header to give his team its second league victory in a row.

Alves led his team to reach the competitions' finals and they lost to Real Madrid 4-1 to lose the Champions League finals for the first time.

Ronaldo almost scored his second of the game in the 62nd minute from a delightful Gareth Bale cross but his effort was saved by the Eibar goalkeeper.

Reporters and supporters were very curious about what happened to their captain late on in the game and Zidane didn't mind letting everybody know, in graphic detail, what had gone down.

"This is a very hard ground to come to and they know how to play here".

But he was back on the pitch to see Cristiano Ronaldo score his second goal of the game with what turned out to be the victor.

After the intermission, and with a goal in their pocket, Real Madrid tried to slow the game's pace, but Eibar did not allow them to.

Two goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, either side of an equaliser by Iván Ramis, saw Zinedine Zidane's men run out 2-1 winners in the Basque Country.

Ronaldo's goals were his 17th and 18th in the league this season.

It happens to the best of them, just ask Gary Lineker.

Isco and Kroos made way for Karim Benzema and Lucas Vazquez with 19 minutes left but Eibar had two golden chances to score a second.

And Zidane was impressed with Real's character against an Eibar side who were on top for long periods of the match.
