A warehouse Sized Asteroid Said Hello To Earth

The safety of our planet, however, was jeopardized over the weekend when scientists nearly failed to detect a football field-sized asteroid heading towards Earth.

The asteroid, named Asteroid 2018 GE3, was closest to Earth at around 2.41 a.m. ET on April 15 when it was spotted about 119,500 miles away, EarthSky.org reports. Those asteroids, however, pose no threat to Earth.

2018 GE3 was first discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey which is approaching Earth on April 14. "Hours later, amateur astronomer Michael Jäger of Weißenkirchen Austria video-recorded the space rock gliding through the southern constellation Serpens", Spaceweather.com reported.

The asteroid's diameter was estimated to be between 48 and 110 metres, and it was travelling at 106,497kmh.

The asteroid which flies past by Earth on Sunday was about six times the size of the meteor that was exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains in Chelyabinsk in the month of February during the year 2013.

Is the world headed for a new Cold War?
Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White told reporters on Saturday the strikes "successfully hit every target ". Syrians gather in a central square in Damascus on April 16.

"It doesn't take a very large object". Had 2018 GE3 been just a little closer, scientists and officials would have had little warning once the space rock plunged into the Earth's atmosphere. And that particular asteroid was estimated to have produced about 185 times more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, the report said.

The April asteroid, however, traveling at a speed of about 66,000 miles per hour, would have likely broken down "due to friction with the air" as soon as it entered Earth's atmosphere, EarthSky reported. Nevertheless, a few of an asteroid this size may have gotten across Earth's surface area, and an asteroid this huge can triggering some local damage, depending upon different elements such as structure, speed, entry angle, and area of effect.

"Nevertheless, it is a significant asteroid, illustrating how even large space rocks can still take us by surprise", the media outlet pointed out.
