Apple chief Tim Cook criticises Facebook privacy strategy

Tim Cook has rebuked Facebook's methods of compiling detailed user profiles from individuals' data, adding that privacy represented "a human right" to Apple.

"If our customers were our product", Cook said in an interview with Recode and MSNBC that will air on April 6. "We've elected not to do that", Cook said. We're not going to traffic in your personal life.

When asked what he would do if he were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Cook said, "I wouldn't be in this situation". "I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation", the exec said in an interview with Recode's Kara Swisher and MSNBC's Chris Hayes. We've worked for the music industry to code things explicit, and so a parent could say, "I don't want my child listening to explicit content". "The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetised our customer. if our customer was our product". Apple has policies of what is and isn't allowed there, and so Hayes and Swisher pressed him on whether Facebook's privacy issues might lead Apple to do something with that power. "I do think that it is time for a set of people to think deeply about what can be done here".

Speaking in an interview with United States network MSNBC and tech site Recode, the Apple chief executive said that while he believed tech firms should self-regulate, it was too late for Facebook. It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America. Lawmakers have also floated tougher rules on the company and two Congressional committees have formally invited the Facebook CEO to testify.

Probably not, but he certainly deserved more love from the BBWAA voters than he received. Staub had been battling health issues for years, suffering a heart attack in 2015.

When asked what he would do if he were in Mark Zuckerburg's shoes right now, Cook replied, " What would I do? "And we don't subscribe to the view that you have to let everybody in that wants to or if you don't, you don't believe in free speech".

What do you think of Tim Cook's comments?

If you haven't been following the situation, here's a quick recap of events to date: Facebook is in hot water with users and lawmakers after it was discovered that Cambridge Analytica managed to improperly obtain the data of around 50 million Facebook users, and may have shared that information with Donald's Trump 2016 presidential campaign.
