China supports probe of alleged chemical attack in Syria

Syria in turn accused the United States, then Israel, of attacking an air base in Homs early Monday, with both countries denying involvement in the attack.

American officials say Israel informed the USA of its plans to strike a Syrian airbase days after a chemical weapon attack left dozens of civilians dead in a rebel-held city east of Damascus.

At least 14 people have died following missile strikes on a Syrian military air base in Tayfur, near the city of Homs.

According to the Syrian media, the country's air defenses had come face to face with a missile attack during which almost 8 missiles were shot down. It said the other three landed in the western part of the T4 base.

Syrian state TV meanwhile quoted the unnamed military official as saying Israeli F-15 warplanes had fired several missiles while flying over neighboring Lebanon.

On Sunday French President Emmanuel Macron had spoken by phone with US President Donald Trump, who had previously warned there would be a "big price to pay" for Saturday's suspected poison-gas attack on Douma.

At the time of the weekend attack in Douma, Syrian government forces and their allies were in the midst of clearing the last pocket of rebel resistance in the eastern Ghouta region, where the town is located.

The Pentagon said: "The Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria".

"An aggression was perpetrated on T-4 air base in several strikes that is most likely to be an American attack", state television said in a news flash.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria", tweeted Trump.

"Through the relevant channels we already conveyed to the USA that armed force under mendacious pretext against Syria - where, at the request of the legitimate government of a country, Russian troops have been deployed - could lead to grave repercussions", he said.

"President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad".

Israel's Foreign Ministry had no comment when asked about reports of the airstrikes. The US and France have denied striking in response to an alleged poison attack two days ago.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said Assad's government and its backers, including Russian Federation, "must be held to account" if it is found to have been responsible for the suspected poison gas attack. It also, perhaps, came as a bit of a surprise as Trump has often been criticised for his lack of the same towards his Russian counterpart for his country's alleged involvement in the meddling of the 2016 United States presidential election.

According to The Atlantic, The White Helmets, a voluntary aide group, pinned the blame for the assault, which claimed more than 40 civilian lives, on the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Ultimately, however, the Syrian government agreed to destroy its stockpiles of the weapon, and the USA did not respond with strikes.

The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting for Monday to discuss the incident amid worldwide outrage over the alleged used of poison gas. The European Union also said evidence pointed to the use of chemical weapons by Assad's forces.
