Commonwealth Games 2018: Akani Simbine stuns Yohan Blake to win 100m gold

Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake was tipped to win the men's 100-metre final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Monday night.

Still relatively unknown outside of athletics circles, the 24-year-old South African finished fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympics and London 2017 World Championships, and quietly ran below 10 seconds on eight occasions last year.

Now it seems even that achievement is up for grabs, as certain images show Blake's foot apparently infringing the boundaries of his lane.

Henricho Bruintjies completed a one-two for South Africa by claiming silver, while Blake made do with bronze.

"I knew it was something I could do, it was just a matter of coming here and making sure I put the ideal race together", said the 24-year-old Simbine, who was fifth in the 100m final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, one spot behind Blake. I didn't get the start and I was all over the place.

"It's my first worldwide title and for me it's a milestone, a stepping stone towards the world championships, and the Olympics and more competitions and more global competitions", said Simbine, adding he needed to call his mother watching back home in South Africa.

"It is an incredible feeling to come here and do what I could have done, and I've won the gold medal which is something I knew I could do". He spoke about Yohan Blake, he talked about a number of exciting youngsters who are coming up.

Blake pointed to his poor begin as the rationale behind his failure to reside as much as his popularity as favourite. I believed in myself, that I may get the gold medal.

The South African, who beat Peaty in the event at the 2014 Glasgow Games, celebrated wildly by punching the water before climbing on to the lane rope and pumping his fists in delight.
