Former First Lady Barbara Bush In Failing Health, Not Seeking Further Treatment

"Family is unquestionably the most important part of my life", Mrs Bush said in a founder's message on the foundation's website. A Bush family spokesman said she was being cared for at her home.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush, the wife and mother of two presidents, has made a decision to end medical treatment for a life-threatening illness.

She has had a series of recent hospitalizations, but the family did not provide details about her condition. Apparently, Barbara Bush's health took a turn for the worse after a few days at her residence.

In 2009 she underwent heart surgery for a narrowing of her main heart valve and a year earlier she had surgery on a perforated ulcer.

She later said that dyed hair didn't look good on her and credited the colour to the public's perception of her as "everybody's grandmother".

Democratic US Representative for New York Sean Patrick Maloney said: "Barbara Bush was a graceful first lady who has dedicated her life to improving education and promoting literacy".

In April 2017, he was released from a hospital in Houston after being treated for 2 weeks for a mild case of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. Proceeds from the books benefited grownup and household literacy packages.
