Modi interested only in becoming PM: Rahul

Gandhi started his address to Congress workers at the Talkatora Stadium, where the party's year-long programme was launched, by quoting from what he described as a statement by the prime minister.

"In 1957, when Pandit Nehru was the Prime Minister and Mrs. Indira Gandhi the Congress President, the Communist Government in Kerala was dismissed".

Modi's earlier slogan of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" (Save daughters, educate them) had become Beti bachao from the BJP and its leaders, said Gandhi.

Gandhi said that Modi had severely hurt India's secular and tolerant image overseas.

The BJP spokesperson termed Rahul as a failed politician. As for the Congress "Save the Constitution" campaign, he said: "It (campaign) was not to save the Constitution and democracy but to save Rahul's career".

Mr Gandhi also targeted that the prime-minister within the new spate of baby rape scenarios, which evoked fury on the other side of the country.

Paswan, who holds the food and consumer affairs portfolio, said the Congress party lost 2014 election as it "cheated Dalits". "The Congress has spared no institution and is attacking the EC [Election Commission], the Supreme Court [and] the Army for petty political gains".

Gandhi said International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde had told Modi recently that atrocities were being committed against women in India. Countering Congress President Rahul Gandhi's charge of rising incidents of anti-Dalit attacks under the present BJP regime, the LJP chief said the Narendra Modi government has strengthened the legal framework to prevent atrocities against SCs and STs.

Raut said that the institutions such as the RBI, Supreme Court, Election Commission and erstwhile Planning Commission were all under threat.

He demanded that Rahul should apologise to the nation for degrading contribution of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in the making of the constitution of India.

Soon after his speech, the BJP chief returned fire and said the opposition party's campaign was a farce and actually a "saving dynasty" drive.

"It is also no coincidence that in 1997, the year Mrs. Sonia Gandhi took primary membership of the Congress the Congress-Third Front Government took away promotional benefits of SC/ST employees!"

Hitting back at Gandhi, BJP President Amit Shah said the "Save the Constitution" campaign is an exercise to save the Gandhi dynasty.

Shah also took to popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook with a post titled "Saving the Constitution or Saving Dynasty" and accused the Congress of again taking the "only path it knows very well, of spreading hate and divisions in our society".
