National School Walkout is Friday. Here's how local students are participating

"Educators are united in saying "No More" to the gun violence that has senselessly injured or taken the lives of too many students and too many school staff members, some of whom have bravely sacrificed themselves to shield their students from harm", said CTA President Eric Heins. In March, the Davis district advised students that they would be marked absent if they left class to participate in on-campus demonstrations - a stance that drew considerable criticism during a Davis school board meeting on April 5. Students, however, were advised by administrators not to walk out of their respective schools on that day and most complied.

In March, students in the Cape Fear area participated in the national movement started in response to the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018.

Bowes added "Normal instruction will continue during any voluntary organized activity on campus, and students who choose to participate in planned campus activities are expected to return to class following those events".

The School District of Manatee County notified students and parents on April 13 that walkouts and protests of any kind would be considered a distraction to students' learning.

Just as it has done every year since the April 20, 1999, shooting killed 12 students and a teacher, Columbine High School will be closed, and students there will stick with their tradition of holding a day of service to commemorate the tragedy in a community that includes both those who have pushed for gun control and to arm teachers. The district said the unexcused absence will be the only disciplinary action issued to students exercising their right to protest.

Angels' Shohei Ohtani eager to get back on mound
Red Sox slugger Mookie Betts wasted no time in tormenting Ohtani, smashing a lead-off home run to get Boston on the board. Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after the game that Ohtani had blisters occasionally in Japan .

However, Quattlebaum confirmed in an email Thursday that New Hanover County Schools has not approved any student walkouts. "Police were everywhere. We were just hiding in a dark classroom".

The movement was also helped by a petition following the Valentines Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; over 250,000 people have signed the petition, with over 2,000 protests registered.

"We fully support student voice, however it must be done in a way that is safe and doesn't negatively impact education", the principals said in their call.

Students are walking out of schools to protest inaction from lawmakers against gun violence. "In many states it's more hard to register to vote than it is to buy a rifle", the website states.

But national organizers have said Friday's event is not a 17 minute recognition but instead is designed for students to walk out for the entire day.
