VAR madness in Germany as penalty is awarded during half-time break

"Chaos", "madness" and "bizarre" - that's just three of the words used to describe the scenes when a penalty was awarded at half-time during last night's Bundesliga clash between Mainz and Freiburg.

Following a nervy first half Mainz took the lead in curious circumstances when they were given a penalty by Video Assistant Referee system VAR after the referee had already blown for half-time.

He ordered the players back onto the pitch much to the bemusement of Freiburg coach Christian Streich, who was seen shaking his head in disbelief.

Mainz moved out of the relegation zone following Monday's win but only on goal difference.

Speaking to Eurosport, Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier said the side would have to "accept it with a heavy heart": "It leaves a bitter taste". However, that was not the end of the first half action.

Israel Concerned Syria Strikes Could Harm Its Security
Although details were not given reports show that manned aircraft as well as naval forces were used in the airstrikes. No casualties have been reported.

La Liga, however, has opted to bring in VAR for 2018-19, while lawmakers have given the green light for video replays to be used at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Spectators showed their displeasure by throwing toilet rolls onto the pitch during an incident-packed game at the Opel Arena, which the hosts won 2-0.

The Mainz forward then picked out his teammate De Blasis who slotted home - luckily off the post. The sprinklers were on at the time he made the decision to call the visitors back onto the field in the Bundesliga fixture.

Shortly before half-time there were muted appeals for a penalty decision, but they were turned down by referee Guido Winkmann.

Premier League clubs have voted against introducing VAR technology for next season, preferring to continue with tests.
