Incremental North Korean denuclearisation will be unacceptable - South Korea official

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday said he hoped that the forthcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would bring peace to the region.

Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong-un shakes hands with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in this May 9, 2018 photo released on May 10, 2018 by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang.

Last month, Pompeo became the first known USA official to meet with Kim, where he helped lay the groundwork for the upcoming meeting with Trump. "They seem to be in good health", Trump wrote in a post on Twitter.

Kim, who picked Beijing to make his maiden official trip overseas in March, has also invited Xi to visit North Korea.

The White House's remarks follow on from similar positive remarks from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who last week returned from his second trip to Pyongyang. North Korea has a reputation for being unstable and inconsistent on its commitments, and the United States too, with its recent move of unilaterally pulling out of the Iran deal, has damaged its reputation on the worldwide front.

The roadmap calls for providing immediate economic compensation for the North in exchange for comprehensive denuclearization based on transfer of its nuclear warheads, nuclear materials and ICBMs to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try or that we should open up the national checkbook as President Trump appears ready to do.

In a statement carried by state media, North Korea's Foreign Ministry said that all of the tunnels at the country's northeastern testing ground will be destroyed by explosion, and that observation and research facilities and ground-based guard units will also be removed. "They are in great need of agricultural equipment and technology", he said on CBS' "Face the Nation".

"The conversations are professional", he said on "Fox News Sunday". "It means getting rid of the uranium enrichment and plutonium reprocessing capabilities", adding the process would also need to address North Korea's ballistic missiles.

Just two weeks ago, apartments in Dandong New District were selling for as little as 3,000 yuan per square meter, he said.

"If we get denuclearization, of course, there will be sanctions relief, certainly".

"I don't think anybody believes you're going to sign the complete ending of the nuclear program in one day. I think what the prospect for North Korea is to become a normal nation, to behave and interact with the rest of the world the way South Korea does".

The comments from Bolton and Pompeo come as Trump prepares to meet with Kim in June.
