Iranian Top Security Official Says No Retreat On Syria, Missiles

In a world where North Korea has the bomb, Syria may be using chemical weapons on its own people and failed states across Africa and the Middle East have created a flood of refugees, the most frightening development of all is the US decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, according to a former head of NATO.

Earlier this month, the European Commission, the EU executive, proposed a series of measures which include banning EU-based firms from complying with the revived US sanctions.

"We have not decided yet to stay in the deal", said the Iranian official, who briefed a small group of reporters under ground rules of anonymity.

"I personally think none of us will be able to get around it".

"That is why we proposed to establish a comprehensive negotiating framework with Iran". "But I'm sorry to say we haven't seen the Plan B yet". "The Plan B has just started to be figured out".

He said European measures would need in large part to ensure that oil exports remained the same and that the SWIFT worldwide payments messaging system continued to work for Iran.

Washington has not only promised to impose "the strongest sanctions in history" on Tehran, but also threatened to punish companies that trade with it.

Speaking in Tehran, the Iranian capital, President Hassan Rouhani rejected United States demands dismissing Pompeo's conditions as "sham" diplomacy. They continued: "We urge the USA to ensure that the structures of the JCPOA can remain intact, and to avoid taking action which obstructs its full implementation by all other parties to the deal".

Iran wants European powers to give it a package of economic measures by the end of the month to compensate for the US withdrawal from their 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, a senior Iranian official said on Friday. He also rejected any new negotiations over Iran's missile programme, which was not covered in the nuclear deal and which Iran says it will never give up. "The IAEA wants to make sure that there won't be any problem", he said, adding that there had been no change in Iranian behavior either over the first quarter of 2018 or since Trump's announcement.

US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the accord earlier this month, putting its future in jeopardy.

There are discussions about protective laws known as blocking statutes to shield companies that do business in Iran and special lines of credit for companies that are willing to take the risk.

Highlighting how hard it will be, the US Treasury announced on Thursday more sanctions on several Iranian and Turkish companies and a number of aircraft in a move targeting four Iranian airlines.

"We need both legal and political commitments by the remaining participants of the JCPOA, that they can continue the JCPOA with Iran without the USA and they can provide Iran with the benefits of sanction-lifting", stated Araghchi. Some Western companies have already quit Iran or said they may have to leave because of the new US sanctions.

Trump sees various "flaws" in the deal, including that many of its restrictions lapse over time and that it does not address Iran's ballistic missile program or its role in regional conflicts like the wars in Syria and Yemen. The withdrawal of United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran and imposing further sanctions could jeopardize the arms control agreement to which Iran has dismantled pursuant to the report made by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
