Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, singer-songwriter Khadja Nin and Loveless director Andrei Zvyagintsev comprise the rest of the jury.

Fremaux and the other organisers also plan to set up a specific telephone hotline so that victims of sexual harassment and abuse are able to report what happened to them.

On its official Twitter account, Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Kingdom in Egypt stated that the Saudi Film Council affiliated to the General Authority for Culture will set up pavilion during the festival, displaying 9 of the most important Saudi movie productions, as well as introducing various activities.

After years of spotless red carpets, Cannes Film Festival 2018 opens with a rather political affair on Tuesday.

Long before Weinstein was accused of attacking four women at the festival, Cannes had been under fire for a "problem with women".

Cannes has come under criticism for years for not selecting more women directors.

When a reporter wondered whether this year's jury was the most female-centric in the festival's history, Blanchett immediately responded, "No".

Despite the "female majority" jury, the irony of just three women directors competing for the top award - Eva Husson for Girls of the Sun, Nadine Labaki for Capernaum and Alice Rohrwacher for Lazzro Felice (Happy as Lazzaro) - wasn't lost on many.

Jessica Chastain, an actress and regular attendee of the French Riviera festival, previous year reflected on her time spent on the Cannes jury shortly after they selected Ruben Ostlund's The Square as the Palme d'Or victor.

Stewart said she hoped to be "fundamentally moved" by the films in competition and that the eventual recipient of the Palme d'Or would "still stand up in 10 years' time".

In another poll, it's Blankenship 28 percent, Morrisey 27 percent, Jenkins 14 percent. Senate and promote the president's agenda", Blankenship responded in a statement.

"Do I think it will happen more in the future?"

This year's jury is headed by Cate Blanchett, an outspoken member of the Time's Up movement.

That change is clearly being seen and felt across the festival this year.

The festival's director Thierry Fremaux said on Monday that "cinema has always been in the hands of men".

"It's very hard to sit in judgement of other artists. that is going to be the most challenging, most painful moment for all of us", said Blanchett.

The festival this year even altered its sacred schedule to eliminate morning press screenings ahead of premieres - a strategic switch meant to blunt the effect of press-corps boos marring film premieres, a practice that had emerged as a kind of blood sport at Cannes. "It has been irritating to me to think that I'm in Cannes because I'm a woman filmmaker and that now, with everything that's happening, the world has made a decision to put females in the spotlight".

Amidst the less starry line-up at the festival, the new "Star Wars" spin-off, "Solo" is the only Hollywood blockbuster. One of the hottest properties on the Cannes market is a female-led spy film 355, to star Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing and Lupita Nyong'o.

Also likely absent from Cannes will be two filmmakers living under house arrest in their home countries.

Iranian Jafar Panahi, whose 3 Faces is in competition, and Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov's film Leto (or Summer), are critics of their government and will not be present to accept the award if it goes to them.

Pointedly, however, he has not risked giving von Trier a press conference this time for his new serial killer flick, "The House That Jack Built" with Uma Thurman and Matt Dillon.
