Making Money Betting Favorite Justify in the Kentucky Derby

Pletcher and Bob Baffert thought that all the key horses in the field got good draws.

By the time Baffert managed to get into Churchill Downs on Tuesday, the process was halfway done and Justify had landed in the No. 7 post. Then again, Baffert won his most recent Run for the Roses in 2015, when American Pharoah became just the second horse to triumph from the No. 18 position.

"That's a good spot", Baffert said. One of those horses is Magnum Moon, who is 6-1 in the early odds and will go from the No. 16 hole. A race for female horses will take place on Friday.

Trainer Bob Baffert, a four-time Derby victor who won the Triple Crown in 2015 with American Pharoah, is back with two horses, Solomini and the favorite, Justify. "At some point, some horse is going to come along and do it and I really hope it's Justify".

Though he had seven Eclipse Awards to his name as the nation's top trainer, Pletcher was widely viewed as a Derby Day disappointment heading into last year's race. Super Saver raced three more times after the Derby, finishing eighth, fourth, and tenth.

Before the race, often called "the most exciting two minutes in sports", on Saturday, here are seven facts about its history and past winners.

Europe-based Mendelssohn the second choice at 5-1 and will start from the 14th post among the 20-horse field in the 144th Run for the Roses.

Reflecting O'Brien's usual pattern of shipping late, Mendelssohn did not arrive at Churchill Downs until Monday and no one from his camp appeared at the post-position draw, which is a bit of a social failing in Louisville on Derby week. While jockey Ryan Moore has ridden Mendelssohn to four victories, he finished seventh in 2013's lone appearance at Churchill Downs' prestigious race.

Terrifying moment man is attacked by lion in front of screaming onlookers
A police spokesperson told the Associated Press that the man suffered jaw and neck injuries and is intensive care. Onlookers can be heard screaming for help as the lion swings at Hodge, who then appears motionless at that point.

The field for the 2018 Kentucky Derby is stacked.

Bottom line: If Pletcher wins his third Derby this year, putting him right on the heels of Baffert and D.Wayne Lukas, it will be impossible to quibble with the record.

Mendelssohn, who came over from the U.K.to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf a year ago on grass, certainly has the pedigree to be great on dirt: Purchased for $3 million at auction as a yearling, he's a half-brother to the great mare Beholder, who won 11 Grade 1s.

The main starting gate holds 14 horses and a six-stall auxiliary gate is attached.

Justify is one of two horses in Saturday's 1¼-mile race who didn't race at age 2. "You need to have a good horse and you need to have a good trip regardless of where you start".

"They are a little competitive, so they get to bet on their horse with play money, we use play money, 'prestige bucks, '" director of operations Yvonne Sturrock says.

Solomini, Justify's stablemate, Enticed, Bolt d'Oro, Instilled Regard and Firenze Fire also got their first gallops in on the track Tuesday. He'll have the guidance of jockey Mike E. Smith, a four-time Triple Crown victor who ranks second in all-time earnings, according to Equibase. The colt drew the No. 11 post, which means he will be waiting the longest for the gate to open. "Bolt is so well-minded that he doesn't work himself up".

Lukas, the 82-year-old Hall of Famer, has his 49th Derby starter in Bravazo.
