Ricciardo was also filmed celebrating his win by falling into a Red Bull pool in full racing attire.

Behind him was Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, followed by Valtteri Bottas in fifth place, but neither drivers could pass Hamilton in the latter stages of the race to take on the race leader. Verstappen will start from the back on Sunday, and could struggle to work his way through the field even in the quickest vehicle: Overtaking at Monaco is notoriously hard.

Mercedes gambled as Q2 began by switching to "ultra-soft" tyres in order, potentially, to start the race on them.

In the end, Ricciardo's winning margin was seven seconds - but only because Vettel lost time after the virtual safety auto came out for the last few laps.

Having missed qualifying because his vehicle could not be repaired in time following his FP3 shunt, Verstappen then had to watch on as team mate Daniel Ricciardo captured pole.

Vettel said: "We had the pace, it was a tricky race". Taking the last place on the podium was Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.

"He is up to third and we have a very strong auto".

Hamilton said he had been cruising around and was intensely frustrated that with passing all but impossible he had been instructed at an early point in the race to just bring his Mercedes home. While Mercedes termed this as a step backwards, it seems that the only disappointment from Monaco would be Daniel Ricciardo not accepting Christian Horner's dare to do a shoey with Monaco's Prince Albert!
