Senate releases 2500 pages that detail 2016 meeting at Trump Tower

Last December, Trump jnr told House lawmakers that he couldn't answer questions about what he told his father after the meeting, citing attorney-client privilege, Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said afterward. His brother-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his father's then-campaign manager, Paul Manafort, also attended the meeting.

This document dump, on the eve of the one-year anniversary of Mueller's appointment to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, is providing more fodder for the special counsel to scrutinize the underlying motivations of both Trump himself and other key players in the saga, and to check the veracity of Trump Jr.'s statements against the actual facts.

If there's a single big takeaway from the almost 2,000 pages of transcripts of interviews with Donald Trump Jr. and others by congressional investigators, it's that Trump Jr. never thought twice about meeting with people tied to Russian Federation promising dirt on his father's political opponent.

Trump Jr. told the Russians he was too busy with the campaign to look into the story they proposed, but he offered to discuss possible changes to the Magnitsky Act if his father won the election, according to Kaveladze. Most notably, the President's eldest son minimized how involved Trump was in crafting a July 2017 statement aboard Air Force 1 that served as the family's initial public comment on the Trump Tower meeting.

One newsworthy item to note relates to a controversial meeting between Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer named Natalia Veselnitskaya that took place in the summer of 2016.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN.

Overall, the newly-released documents seem to indicate that a short 20-minute meeting resulted in hours of interviews and thousands of pages of documents for little reason.

The committee pushed Trump Jr.to explain a phone call he had with a blocked number after setting up the Trump Tower meeting.

Wednesday's release also contains transcripts and notes from several other witnesses at the meeting.

In the transcripts, Trump Jr. said that he was skeptical that Rob Goldstone, the publicist who had been the first to contact him about a meeting, had colleagues who possessed incriminating information about Clinton, but said felt he should at least "hear them out". "I wasn't part of the meeting, but yes, I believe I was aware that it had occurred". "I do think they dropped the ball with respect to crediting the Steele dossier - I think it gave rise to a lot of rumors and gave rise to a lot of unverified information, which should not have been part of it". "I never spoke with my father about it".

"As I said i n my statement, it was a 15 colloquial term used to say, hey, great, thank you". He said he reported back to Emin Agalarov that "this was the most embarrassing thing you've ever asked me to do".

Two questions about the Trump Tower meeting were included on a leaked list of questions that Mueller wants to ask Trump if he ultimately agrees to sit for an interview.

"I hope this favor was worth it for your dad-it could blow up big", he texted Agalarov. Goldstone wrote. "And because I am not able to respond out of courtesy to you and your father".
