Senators to press Gina Haspel about her role in Central Intelligence Agency torture

So far, the only Senate Republicans who have announced opposition to Haspel are Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona, who is battling cancer and is not expected to be present for the vote. The president attacked the senator this week, at a campaign-style rally in Elkhart, calling him "Sleeping Joe" and criticising his record in Washington, which Trump said made Donnelly, who was elected in 2012, an "incredible swamp person".

Haspel faced intense questioning from lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week over her time at the Central Intelligence Agency when it used "enhanced interrogation methods" like waterboarding following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In a closed session following Haspel's public testimony, the mood was less tense and more familiar, according to people familiar with the proceedings who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions. "At an IN campaign rally this week, Trump referred to the Indian senator as "Sleepin' Joe" Donnelly," called him a "swamp creature", and urged the crowd to vote for his Republican opponent.

Supporters of Haspel are pushing for votes by the Senate intelligence committee and the full Senate before the Memorial Day break, at the end of the month.

In an interview Thursday on Bloomberg Daybreak, Portman predicted "a tight vote" on the Senate floor, adding it was unfortunate "because I think she deserves more support than she's than she's going to get". In her confirmation, while she refused to criticize colleagues for their conduct, she pledged that there would be no return to those programs under her leadership.

Let me, once again, relate my personal experience of the type of torture that Haspel is accused of overseeing. In fact, they heard much that would lead them to believe she is flawless for the role.

Democratic Sens. Martin Heinrich from New Mexico and Kamala Harris from California also admonished Haspel personally on Wednesday, for being seemingly evasive during questioning at the hearing.

The CIA said Haspel's career, which began in January 1985, was secret until she was named deputy director past year. At this point the captain said we were getting the hell out of there, so I have no idea what happened.

Donnelly announced his decision after meeting with Haspel, he said.

Haspel's most recent assignments include: chief of station in the Europe Division, 2014-2017; deputy director of the National Clandestine Service, 2012-2014; and deputy director of the National Clandestine Service for Foreign Intelligence and Covert Action, in 2012.
