'Yanny' versus 'laurel': An expert weighs in on the debate

Some listeners are hearing the word "Yanny" repeated while others are hearing "Laurel". If you haven't, here's the tl;dr: There's an audio clip of a male computer-generated voice saying a word. Some people swear they hear nothing but Laurel, while others can't fathom hearing anything but Yanny.

"I honestly think after looking at the spectrograms and playing with some filters that this is just the word "Laurel" with some high-frequency artifacts overlaying it", Yazel told the website.

Remember that stupid black-and-blue dress that divided an entire nation several years ago? To some people, the word sounds like "yanny".

The clip is apparently a result of the McGurk effect, an illusion in which people hear something different from the actual sound due to a visual stimulus.

Democrats ask FTC to investigate Google's data collection practices
This data includes location information regardless of whether a user has turned off their location or does not have a SIM card. The report said a Google spokesman had refused to answer specific questions, without detailing what the queries were.

In a freaky clip posted to Twitter, a spoken word plays on repeat and apparently not everyone can agree on what that word is.

"Laurel till the day I die". Apparently it has to do with the pitch of the audio; yanny is in high pitch, while laurel is in low pitch. "The interesting thing about the word Yanny is that the second frequency that our vocal track produces follows nearly the same path, in terms of what it looks like spectrographically, as Laurel".

If you want to know what is causing this incredible rift (and some actually hear both at the same time), some internet wizards have solved the mystery.

If you heard "Laurel", you are the victor and have earned bragging rights for this round of internet debate. By 5 p.m. Tuesday, "Laurel" was trending on Twitter, which means it has also become content on pretty much every news website, including The Washington Post.
