Amazon to livestream Premier League in online shakeup

Amazon has secured the rights to show 20 live Premier League football matches on its Prime Video service each season from 2019 to 2022.

And while the service won't be rivalling Sky and BT in terms of quantity - it's only agreed 20 matches per season for the duration of the three-year contract - the delivery mechanism is quite unusual.

It will be the first time a full round of Premier League fixtures has been broadcast live in the UK. BT bought the other package for £885m, down from its current £960m and for fewer matches.

The remaining package of 20 matches has been secured by BT for a cost of £90 million (€102 million) meaning the telco has secured 52 games for a totalof £975 million over three years.

Football matches on Amazon will only be available to Amazon Prime customers, for which membership now costs £7.99 a month or £79 a year.

Now, some four months on and following extended negotiations, a deal has been struck with Amazon and BT Sport.

Amazon is not the only tech company hungry for live sports.

You will also get all the Champions League games on BT Sport with this, if that makes you feel any better?

The matches will be available to anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription, which means you shouldn't have to shell out any extra cash to get your Premier League fix.

Now it has been announced that it was successful in at least part of its bid.

Amazon just inked one of its biggest sports deals yet.

The Premier League had introduced two new packages of live fixtures that included matches played simultaneously which would particularly appeal to an online streaming group.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.

Following confirmation of the Amazon deal, the Premier League have been criticised on social media for adding a third network to their list of television subscribers, with fans now being asked to pay approaching €100-a-month to watch all live matches.

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore said the league's revenue sharing remained the most equitable in Europe but it was time to amend an agreement dating back to 1992.

"With Amazon's rival, this could well be the last time that both BT and Sky own the live Premier League rights in the United Kingdom, with Richard Scudamore keen to attract more online players to the table".
