France 1 - 0 Peru | 21 Jun 2018

France was successful in securing three points in its opening round of group play, picking up a 2-1 victory over Australia.

Andre Carrillo fired over soon after the hour, with Guerrero doing the same as France were forced deeper, and with a quarter of an hour to go a Carrillo cross was turned into the side-netting by the stretching Farfan.

Hugo Lloris, who will receive his 100th cap for France, will remain in goal.

Chances were flowing for France, Raphael Varane missing with a header before Gallese saved with his legs to deny Griezmann after Giroud found his strike partner with a headed pass.

But they were subdued in the second half, suffering frustration in the closing minutes when Blaise Matuidi shot just wide and Giroud had an effort blocked that ballooned over the top of the goal.

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero was struggling to make an impact on his World Cup starting debut.

Guerrero had one of Peru's best chances in the 87th minute from a free kick, but his attempt went right at Lloris. Midfielder Pedro Aquino went closest to levelling when his stunning strike cannoned off the bar.

Gareca said the Incas, who played some attractive soccer in going down 1-0 to Denmark in their first game, would not change their approach against the highly-fancied French on Thursday.

Peru made two changes at the break, bringing on Anderson Santamaria and Jefferson Farfan for Yotun and Rodriguez, and they were nearly level within five minutes as Pedro Aquino's shot from 25 yards beat Lloris but hit the outside of the post.

Pedro Aquino rattled the crossbar for Peru with a long shot in the second half but France were comfortable winners.

France had been pushed back by their plucky opponents, who enjoyed more possession and made more successful passes than Les Bleus but could not end their 40-year wait for a goal on football's biggest worldwide stage. Or can Peru avoid another defeat and upset France?

- France are unbeaten in their last eight World Cup fixtures against CONMEBOL opposition (W4 D4).

Peru have now attempted 27 shots without scoring at the 2018 World Cup finals; only Morocco (28) have had more without a goal.

- Les Bleus have qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the sixth time in their last eight appearances - only failing to do so in 2002 and 2010.
