G7 leaders meet amid fear of a global trade war

The G7 summit, which groups Canada, the United States, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, begins on Friday in the town of La Malbaie in Quebec. "The EU trade surplus with the U.S. is $151 Billion, and Canada keeps our farmers and others out".

"President Trump will depart the G-7 summit at Charlevoix at 10.30am Saturday (10.30pm Saturday Singapore time), following the session on Women's Empowerment", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Macron told journalists on Thursday, referring to Trump, that "nobody is forever", Reuters reported. It gave Trump a brief respite from criticism over the punishing steel and aluminum tariffs he has imposed on his G7 partners.

The U.S. has been trying to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things. but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

The main meetings will be held two-and-a-half hours north of Quebec City - and of the worldwide media centre housing most of the reporters following the summit - in La Malbaie, Charlevoix.

The potential economic effect on USA exporters could damage Republican support ahead of November's midterms.

Media reports of late have suggested Trump will be a reluctant visitor to Canada, given the summit's proximity on the schedule to next week's meeting with the North Korean leader.

When Barack Obama bade farewell to the German chancellor on his last overseas visit as president, Ms Merkel's eyes are said to have welled with tears as she contemplated the change in the White House.

On Friday, Trump floated the idea of negotiating separate bilateral trade pacts with Canada and Mexico.

Macron came to Ottawa ahead of the G7 summit in part to talk strategy with Trudeau on how to deal with a mercurial president who likes to be liked.

G7 leaders have praised the United States president for his efforts to stabilise the Korean peninsula, but are unhappy that he pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.

"We may have tactical disagreements, but he has always said - and I agree - tariffs are a tool in that effort".

But the French leader quickly added that Trump can't undo all the good work that has been done on pushing Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

"Canada is fighting back to support Canadian workers and the businesses that employ them", Goodale said.

The US Chamber of Commerce says that 2.6 million jobs are threatened by the Trump administration's hardline stance on imports, citing the possibility of retaliatory tariffs by US trading partners.

Most recently, Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear agreement, following his earlier decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

When Trudeau won power, the bedrock of his foreign policy was to return Canada to its traditional multilateral leanings _ support for institutions created after the Second World War such as the United Nations, NATO, the G7 and the worldwide trading order.

They also renewed their commitment to the fight against climate change and to promote democratic values, free and open trade, and gender equality.
