Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

He previously threatened "fire and fury" if Kim threatened the U.S. or its rivals and called off Tuesday's summit after taking offence at North Korean statements.

The arrival of the Air China Airbus 330 flight at Changi airport raised speculation that a delegation of North Korean officials joined an advance team headed by Kim's close aide, Kim Chang Son, who was in Singapore to prepare for the talks.

The KCNA report was unusual in its clarity, mentioning the "historic first summit meeting and talks" between Kim and Trump.

At stake at the summit are North Korea's nuclear weapons and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Another possibility from the summit is a deal to end the Korean War, which North Korea has long demanded, presumably, in part, to get US troops off the Korean Peninsula and, eventually, pave the way for a North Korean-led unified Korea. "It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before".

In a New Year's address, Kim said his country had completed development of its nuclear program and would focus on economic development, suggesting a meeting with South Korea.

As per the report, the USA president has said that if he thinks things are going badly, he will walk out of the meeting, but if things go well, the North Korean leader could receive an invitation to the White House.

He thanked Singapore's organisation of the summit as if it was "their own family affair".

With few sources of information other than the state-run media, gossip and word of mouth, North Koreans had been left largely in the dark about the momentous - and potentially life-changing - events about to take place outside of their isolated nation.

Trump insisted last week that the summit would "not be just a photo op", saying it would help craft a "good relationship" that would lead to a "process" that could result in the "ultimate making of a deal".

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said as he prepared to leave the ongoing G7 summit in Canada early and head to Asia. "Therefore, when the two sides asked us to host the meeting, we can not say no".

"The President truly believes that Kim Jong Un, in the President's words, wants to do something great for his people". While hostilities ended with an armistice in 1953, no peace treaty has been signed yet.

North Korea has so far presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to his neighbors and to the United States as a logical next step following what Kim has claimed is the completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent to what Pyongyang has long claimed is a policy of hostility and "nuclear blackmail" by Washington. "If diplomacy fails, will you support my efforts to authorize the use of military force as a last resort to convince North Korea and China things will be different this time?"

Sporadic provocations by the North have continued while Pyongyang has made increasing advances in its nuclear arsenal, which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion. But it remains unclear if Kim will part with what he likely views as his most important bargaining chip any time soon.
