SpaceX Falcon 9 delivers massive commercial satellite to orbit from Cape Canaveral

SpaceX will go for its 11th successful launch of the year early on Monday, with a mission to send a communications satellite into geostationary transfer orbit.

The rocket carried the SES-12 satellite to orbit for the Luxembourg-based telecom company SES.

SpaceX successfully launched a rocket into the night sky about a half hour after midnight Monday morning, deploying a European company's satellite, SES 12, with no apparent problems. SpaceX won't attempt to recover the first stage after the launch. The satellite, along with SES-8, will reach 18 million TV homes, according to SES.

Commenting on the launch, Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES said, "More content". This satellite will provide video, data, and other communications services across the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. The BFR is the rocket that SpaceX wants to use to get to Mars, and to make extremely quick Earth-to-Earth journeys. "And satellite is one of the (ways) - and sometimes the only way - to connect.to those markets".

Death Toll Climbs From Volcano’s Explosions Of Ash, Molten Rock In Guatemala
Eddy Sanchez, director of the country's seismology and volcanology institute, said the flows reached temperatures of about 700 C. The Guatemalan military said it was providing assistance including clearing volcanic ash from the airport's runway.

Instead, the satellite will rely on electric propulsion, using pulses of xenon gas to slowly circularize its orbit around the equator over a period of months.

The schedule slip on the moon mission comes after SpaceX had already announced it pushed back the test flight of its space taxi for NASA, which has contracted with SpaceX and Boeing (BA) to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Because it takes less on-board xenon propellant to achieve the required equatorial orbit, the Falcon 9, by boosting SES-12 into a high super-synchronous transfer orbit, will add more than five years to the satellite's lifetime and shave almost a month off the time needed to reach its operational location.
